The Gospel of John's thirteenth chapter relates one of the most profound episodes in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. Gathered with His disciples in the upper room mere hours before His death, Jesus rises from the meal, removes His outer garment, wraps a towel arounds His waist, and with a basin and a towel, shows the disciples what it means to serve. The greatest person in the room makes Himself least. He takes on the posture of the lowest servant. He washes His disciples' feet, and then He tells them something remarkable: "You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them" (John 13:13-17).
The culture in which you and I live does not require that we wash one another's feet as an act of hospitality, but the parable lived out before the disciples that evening still speaks in our world. We have been called to follow our Lord, and our Lord "came not to be served, but to serve" (Matthew 20:28). He calls us to surrender ourselves to serve others in the same humility He demonstrated in that upper room.
You and I have been given gifts and talents that are to be used for God's glory and the good of the world. On this page, you will be presented a vast array of opportunities for you to use what the Lord has given you through the ministries of First Baptist Church. Your ministerial staff stands ready to answer any questions you have and to provide the training you need. We invite you to take this first step toward the service to which Almighty God is calling you at First Baptist Church, and we look forward to celebrating what God does through us as we obey Him together!
In Christ,
